Welcome to Music Appreciation!

Hello Music Appreciation Students!

This blog will be used to communicate, to listen to musical examples, and to work on special homework assignments and projects over the course of the semester.

In music, a cadenza (Italian for cadence) is, generically, an improvised or written-out ornamental passage played or sung by a soloist or soloists, usually in a "free" rhythmic style, and often allowing for virtuosic display.(taken from Wikipedia)

View the two videos to the right and then leave a comment about the two different cadenzas. How do they differ? I will be assessing your response for accuracy, so be sure to listen to the entire cadenzas and write at least a few sentences that fully answer the question.

If they do not show up to your right (and there is a white square instead), click on the following links to view on YouTube:

Both of these cadenzas are unique because they have their own rhythm and style. Even though they are both similar they also have differences such as the traditional cadenza was written out and planed. On the other hand the creative cadenza is made up on spot and is just the composer free styling

Both cadenzas are similar. They have a certain old fashioned sound to them. The first one is slow as opposed to the second being faster. The second seems very original :]

After listening to both candenzas i found many ways they are different. One way the are different is there names. One's traditional and the other is creative. The creative candanzea is easily able to like. It's exciting and different it doesn't follow the traditional way. Also creative, in my opinion is more for regular people, who don't know every traditional soloist name but likes many genera of music. But traditional was more of staying in the lines and not truly expressing your self like creative candenza has done.

I noticed a few differences between the two. In the 1st, the lady seemed more structural and the tempo was slower. Also, for the most part, her tempo didn't change too much. Her music seemed more classical. In the 2nd, the man looked to entertain the crowd. His piece also contained a rhythm. He added blues and other songs into his piece too.

I think that the first vedio was a feeling of madnest. Like the song was showing how mas that person was. Then second vedio was more in a happy mood. Like they were thinking alot of happy thoughts.

While both cadenza was similar they are also very different. The 1st cadenza which was done by the lady was very passive in my opinion. I say this because the lady didn't look enthuasistic or had any appealing to the audience and the it was very poignant and structural as torry mention. Nothing really change in the 1st one. As for the 2nd cadenza the man was very enthausistic and very random but at the same time he was very interesting to watch. The tempo changed as the song changed. It is very obvious that it was an improvision becasue the whistling, the notes chosen and becasue he actually sung on some of it. He incorperated many styles which was very exiciting to watch.

The difference between these two cadenzas is that one is traditional and the other one is untraditional. The first one
entitled "tradiational cadenza," is a true example of the tradational cadenza, where the soloist plays ALONE in free time,it was aslo kept short like a traditonal cadenza. The second cadenza seem written out and wasn't tradiotional because he was joined by other instrument at some parts, and it was too long to be taditional.

I think that the difference between Mozart Concierto#3 and Apap Cadenza is that Mozart Concierto is traditional and it sounds like it can be played in an old movie or at a brunch. The other is creative and can be in a childrens fairytale movie when something exciting is about to happen.

The first cadenza was very traditonal as it says being played only by the vilonist. The second one is different accompined by dfferent sounds along with some vocal. It sounds unique to me

These pieces are different because they seem to incorporate different themes in their works. In the traditional cadenza, the violinist seems to be telling a story through her music. It seemed too well "thought out" to be considered a free rhythmic style. In the creative cadenza, the violinist seemed to be more "free form" in his music He incorporated R&B in his piece and played with the orchestra more than the traditional cadenza video. Overall, the creative cadenza was more enjoyable to watch.

The reason it was not that good was because she seemed like she was not enjoying herself. She seemed unhappy and bored playing the violin. For the second performance i would have to say he gave it his all. He was very entertaning with what he was playing. He gave alot of varity tourdes his porformance like singing the blues and many other things. Over all he did a fantastic job.

Both videos display a sense of uniqueness. The difference between the two are that the first video, which was played by a woman, was extremely boring. She seemed as if she was forced to play the violin. She wasn't enthusiastic about it like the second video which was played by a man. He used a combination of whistling, tapping the violin to make a beat, and singing the blues. He used his imagination to the best of his abilities. And over all, his performance was not only outstanding, but also entertaining as well.

Both cadenzas are similar and different. The second cadenza was creative while the first cadenza was traditional. The second cadenza has a free for all type theme, causing happiness. The first cadenza has a fast, but yet serious tempo. The male soloist creates his style as he goes along, which adds taste and flavor. The first soloist has sort of a boring typical sound.

I think the girls cadenza sounds more unique than the man's does because I felt like she did a better job than he did but his was ok too it's just that the girl's cadenza sounded a little better

I also think both of these Cadenza's are unique because i get a feeling when one of them plays the violin. When the girl plays the violin i feel that everything is calm, but when the man plays it I feel that everything is boring or plain.
