Woodwind Instruments Blog

Hello class,

This week, you will be listen to FOUR videos to the right. As you listen, you should think about how the timbre (the tone color) and pitch (highness/lowness) of the instruments are different. Which one creates the highest sounds? Which one creates the lowest sounds?

Here are some good timbre words: light or heavy; dark or bright; breathy; punchy; clear; focussed or unfocussed; piercing; harsh; warm; mellow; resonant; flat; vibrato (do you hear it vibrating?) or no vibrato

For each instrument, write two sentences: One sentence about each instrument that describes the pitch and timbre. A second sentence should describe the style (classical, folk, popular) of the music in the video as best as you can. You should have a total of 8 sentences.

Rubric:
20 pts - Students commented correctly using the blog, and included their name.
20 pts - Students comment on pitch of different instruments.
20 pts - Students correctly comment on the timbre of different instruments.
20 pts - Students correctly describe the style of the music being played by each instrument.

Please write and submit your post for this assignment by Monday, September 19 for full credit.

The pitch of the flute was high and the timbre was light, bright, breathy, and displayed vibrato. I would describe the style of the flute as folk mixed with a little pop. The pitch of the oboe was high and the timbre was light, piercing, and sort of mellow. I believe the style was folk. The pitch of the clarinet was high and the timbre was piercing and bright. The style of the clarinet was a little bit of jazz but towards the end it sort of resembled pop. The pitch of the bassoon was low and the timbre was heavy and mellow. I believe the style was jazz.

The flutes pitch was high, the timbre was flat and unfocused. The style of the instrument was classical, folk and popular. It was classical and folk because of the melody and the story told behind it and it was popular because of his beatbox at the end.

The clarinet had a pitch that was high, the timbre was vibrato, punchy and bright. The style was popular because it sounded like a present day melody.

The oboe had the highest pitch, the timbre was clear, focused, mellow and resonant. I think the style was folk because it sounded like the instrument could be used to tell a story.

The basoon was very low, the lowest woodwind instrument out of them all. The timbre was heavy, breathy, vibrato and harsh. The style was classical because it sounded kind of old school.

Some words that can be used to describe the timbre of the clarinet are: light, clear, piercing, resonant, and vibrato. The overall pitch of the clarinet was high. I believe that the style of this specific video is Classical mixed with R&B. The timbre of the oboe was light, clear, warm, resonant, and vibrato. The overall pitch of this was medium - high. Classical appeared to be the style of this video. The clarinet's timbre is clear, mellow, and resonant. Even though there were multiple pitches in this song, overall, the pitch was medium. i think that the style of this video is either Classical or Blues, or a combination of both. The bassoon's timbre appeared to be warm, mellow, clear, and resonant. I believe the pitch was medium low. I am not exactly sure what the style could be for this video.

The Flute was loud, and very clear. It was high pitched. The timbre was bright, I liked how the man playing the flute mixed it with a little hip-hop.The flute sounded diiferent from the other instruments except the clarinet to me.

The Oboe was also loud, but mellow.IT was also high pitched as well as the flute. It sounds different from the rest of the instruments because of its pitch and timbre.

The Clarinet was vibrant, its pitch was kind of in the middle. It wasnt too loud and it wasnt deep either. The Clarinet sounded like the flute to me because of its pitch, but just slightly different

The Basoon had a timbre that was very dark, and its pitch was deep.
