Styles Blog

Hello Music Appreciators!

This blog will be used to communicate, to listen to musical examples, and to work on special homework assignments and projects over the course of the semester.

To the right are three music videos that have very different styles. Watch each video, decide what style you think the music is, and provide two reasons why you think it falls into that style category. When referring to each video, do not call them "video 1", but call them by the title of the song, or by the musician's/band's name.

If you are unable to view the videos to the right, you may click on the hyperlinks below:
Switchfoot - "Only Hope" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YS5TqZR7_U
Toby Mac and Kirk Franklin - "Lose My Soul" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZG9G68bZO0
The Beatles - "Twist and Shout" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6TIEkB4_F8

Rubric:
These will be graded as follows:
20 pts. You commented correctly, with your name listed.
20 pts. You made an educated guess about the style of each artist.
20 pts. You used two reasons to back up your choice of style.
20 pts. You made reference to band names and/or song titles.
20 pts. You used good grammar and spelling.

To comment, just click on the link below that says "comments." Then make sure you sign your name by clicking "Name/URL" so that I know it is you leaving the comment.

I've heard of switchfoot before, and they are a rock band, even though this is a softer melodic song. I can tell by the guitar, and by the lead singer's vocal inflection on certain words.

Kirk Franklin and Toby Mac is a mixture of blends of Hip hop and Gospel, I can tell by the title lose my "Soul", even though its not like a church choir, but it displays a christian like message making it gospel.

The Beatles play Rock and roll music, I can tell by the electric guitar, and the drums that they play

In the video Only Hope by Switchfoot the style of the music is coutry because the only thing you can hear the most is the guitar. Also usually country singers like Switchfoot plays the guitar and sing too.

In the video Los my soul by Kirk Franklin and Toby Mac the style of the music is a mixture of Inspirational, r&b and rap because Toby Mac and Kirk Franklin is rapping in this song. Also I say r&b because the lady came in and sung the hook. I also say inspirational because at the end of this song Toby Mac said a Inspirational verse st the end of this song.

In the video Twist & Shoot by The Beatles the style of the music is rock because of the lyrics in the song. Also because of the instruments they use like the guitar and drums.

The song Only Hope by SwitchFoot was a country style song. Two reasons of my choice would include the melody and instruments used.
The song Lose My Soul by Kirk Franklin and Toby Mac was a christian and rap style song because of the words of the song and the way the lurics sounded. The instruments also determined the kind of music like the drums and guitar also.
The song by the Beatles called Twist&Shout was a pop and rock style song because of the instruments played like the guitar and drums. Also their lyrics are similar to pop and rock music.

The song Lose my Soul is by Kirk Franklin and Toby Mac. I think the music style is pop and gospel.I said gosperl because, towards the end Kirk Franklin says a prayer to God. I also said pop because the intruments used, like the drums and it also sounds like a guitar was used.

I think the style of the song "only hope" is blues beacuse the way he sings sounds similar to saddness or depression. Also it seems to show a connection towards God because many people look to God as hope, or peacful thoughts during hard times. Moreover "Switchfoot" sounds similar to turining over a new leaf, or to forgive yourself of sin in your life.

In my opinion the song "Lose my soul" is the style of soul and gospel beacuae it shows how people shoud't lose their connection with God. Also this song shows how should not be materialistic, and if you do you'll lose your soul.

The song "Twist & Shout" style is rock and some jazz beacuse the meter is at a certain pace that it sounds like rock. Also they slow the beat and beacomes mellow sound that is commonly used for jazz. I think the song twist and shout shows exciting enegy towardsteenagers.

The song Only Hope by Switchfoot has a country style. I think it was country because of the guitar use. I also think it was country because of his voice when he was singing.

The Song Lose My Soul by Kirk Franklin and Toby Mac had a country mixed with gospel style. I say it was country because of how the beat changed in the beginning. I say it was gospel because of the way it sounded during some parts of the song.

The song Twist & Shout by the beatles had a R&B mixed with Rock and Roll style. I say it was Rock and Roll because of the beat. I say it was R&B because of their voice and the words in the song.

In Only Hope by Switchfoot I think this song can be put into a sub genre of rock music called acoustic rock. I consider it this because there are no actual plugged in musical instruments. You can hear the acoustic guitar and violins, and violas, and cellos, and other string instruments played during the song.
Lose My Soul can be considered a gospel-pop song. The message of the song comes from a bible verse giving it the gospel title. Then there are the rhythms and styles of modern pop music infused into it that can make it a pop style.
Twist and Shout by The Beatles is what I would consider original Rock and Roll. This is rock because you can hear all of the instruments associated with rock like a bass guitar played by Paul, the lead guitar played by John, the rhythm guitar played by George, and the drums played by Ringo. the beat played by Ringo is associated with the mixtures of Rock and Roll also.

I thimk the song switchfoot by Only hope is a mixture of country and rock and roll because most rock and roll players play the guitar and also because he is talking about his problems.

I think the song Lode my Soul fits in the gospel mixed with hip hop category because this song is about your life and also because it has that hip hop beat to it.

I think the song Twist and Shout by The Beatles fits in the rock and roll category because they have a drum set and most bands do amd also because they are shouting and playing very hard and loud.

The video of The Beatles Twist and shout was very good.It was a combination of rock and country.I say this because most rock and roll is fast and the words make it sound like rock but the beat makes it sound country.another reason is the name twist and shout people shout and rock and roll and in most country songs their dances in clude a twist.

The song switch foot by only hope was very intresting. The beat constantly changed to me.The song sounds very country.i believe this because its very slow .another reason is how the mans voice sounds.

The song lose my soul by Kirk Franklin and Toby Mac was the most interesting. It really drew my attention because it sounds like hip hop.It is a mixture of gospel and hip hop.One reason i say this is because of the beat another reason is because of the speep Toby Mac is speaking in.

The song switchfoot by Only hope sounded country.it sounded country because of how slow the singer was speaking.Another reason was the beat.

The song Twist and shout by the beatles was a combination of rock and country. One reason is the beat and another is the name ,people shout in rck and people twist in the dances i country music.

The song lose my soul by Kirk franklin and Toby Mac was gospel and hip hop.i say this because the speed in which they were singing was fast and its music sounded like a gospel beat.

I would say the piece by Switchfoot is country. It's country because those genres tend to have that type of guitar played. Also another reason it is country is because the singer has a little hint of a country accent. The only thing that might possibly make this piece not country is the violins in the song.

I would say that the piece by Kirk Franklin and Toby Mac was a rock and roll soul song. I would say it was rock and roll because it had the drum set and the type of guitar that tend to be incorporated in lots of rock and roll songs. Then i would say it was soul because the music was not hard rock with the singers yelling at you, but they were singing in a soft soul feel.

The song by the Beatles is Oldies Rock and Rock. It is oldies rock and roll because today if you were listening to the contemporary rock and roll station you would not hear the Beatles being played. It is rock and roll because they had electric guitars and a drum set with the upbeat tempo.

The song Only Hope by Swithfoot was most likely a country style song. I believe so because of the constant use of the guitar and the soft mellow tone of his voice. Also the music was very slow and relaxing.

The song Lose My Soul by Kirk Franklin is a gospel song. I believe this because of the religious message the song is sending. Another reason it would be considered gospel is because the music had a vibe that you sometimes feel in church.

The song Twist & Shout would be considered Rock & roll because of the constant use of the guitar and drums. Another reason is because of the constant hollering and screaming done by the group.

From prior knowledg, The Beatles were not just a Rock'n roll band from England but adopted the American style of Rock'n roll as well. In reference to the time period, I believe people like Elvis, an American musician, had a huge influence on The Beatles. Their song "Twist and Shout" most likely shows the style of Rock'n roll with their guitars, snare drum and sort of blues rhythm.

The band Switchfoot appears to have more than one genre or style of music in which they perform. Their song "Only Hope", I believe, is a Christian Rock song. This song contains a guitar and the right rhythm that indicates that it is rock. In addition, the diction in this song indicates that this song is also Christian. Although the main instrument may be the guitar, I have noticed an unexpected instrument, the violin, in which I only find in classic music. This is definitely an extremely diverse band.

Kirk Fanklin is definitely a gospel artist, Toby Mac is a Christian HipHop artist, and Mandissa is a Gospel singer. Kirk and Toby's use of words and ryhthm indicate that this song is HipHop based. Therefore, the style of "Lose My Soul" may be a mixture of Gospel and Christian Rap.

The instrument played in the first video is the trumpet. The trumpet is very dark. I think the music is very light. The pitchness is very low. I dont really think the instrument is unique.

The instrument palyed in the second video is the tuba. The song statrs off very low the becomes high.I think the song is very light. The pitchness of the song is low. I think the instrument is very unique because that instrument is suppose to be loud but its very low.

The third instrument played, is the french horn. The french is very low throught out the whole is piece.i think the piece is very dark. Its unique because of how low it is played.

The fourth instrument played is the trombone. The trombone is very high. The trombone is also light. Its not very soft. The pitchness is high.

The lowest instrument os the french horn, and the highest instrument os the trombone.

The first instument played was a trumpet. The tone color of the instrument is mellow because it sounds like something you will hear at a ceremony. A trumpet is mostly playe in classical music and jazz. Also I think it is not unique because it was plain it seems like it wouldnt stand out as much as it should.

The second instrument is the tuba. The tone color of the instrument is punchy it was annoying to listen too. It is unique because of the difrent sounds mixed within.
Also sounds like the highest instrument.

The third instrument is the french hor. the tone color is light and smooth. It was actually descent but long. This instument is the lowest.

The fourth instrument is the trombone. The tone color is bright. Actually this instrument sounds likew the loudest but it could be the fact that three people are playing the same instrument. It was unique and sometimes i hear that sound in movies.
