Woodwind Instruments

Hello class,

This week, you will be listen to FOUR videos to the right. As you listen, you should think about how the timbre (the tone color) and pitch (highness/lowness) of the instruments are different. Which one creates the highest sounds? Which one creates the lowest sounds?

Here are some good timbre words: light or heavy; dark or bright; breathy; punchy; clear; focussed or unfocussed; piercing; harsh; warm; mellow; resonant; flat; vibrato (do you hear it vibrating?) or no vibrato

For each video, write two sentences: One sentence about each instrument that describes the pitch and timbre. A second sentence should describe the style of the music in the video as best as you can. You should have a total of 8 sentences.

Rubric:
20 pts - Students commented correctly using the blog, and included their name.
20 pts - Students comment on pitch of different instruments.
20 pts - Students correctly comment on the timbre of different instruments.

20 pts - Students correctly describe the style of the music being played by each instrument.

Please write and submit your post for this assignment by Tuesday, September 7 for full credit.

Flute.
The tone of the flute is a high pitch tone and at the end its a piercing sound. Its a pop because of the beat boxing and its very breathy.

Oboe.
I hear a light vibrato to the oboe and it is a high pitch close to the flute but its mellow in this song. This song is more of a classical piece.

Clarinet.
The clarinet certainly has more vibrato than the oboe and it is clear in note transition. This is a jazz piece for sure.

Bassoon.
This instrument out of the woodwinds in this selection has the most vibrato. The lower your instruments pitches go the more vibrato you should get. This is a classical Piece as well. - Myles Alston

The flute has a very high pitch and a bright timbre. The style of music is most likely classical.

The oboe has a high pitch and a light timbre. The style of music is either classical or orchestra.

The clarinet has a range of a low and a very pitch and a focussed timbre. The style of music is classical or jazz.

The bassoon has a high pitch and the timbre has vibrato. The style of music is classical.

Hearing the flute I would ay it's pitch is high, it can become a little lower but still high. The timbre is a sort of piercing with a vibrating part to it. I would say the style, based on this video would be American because it's really fast but can be controlled.
The oboe has a more of a mid-tone pitch to it. I would describe timbre as mellow yet warm. The clarinet is very unique because its pitch can become high and low. The timbre is flat and has little vibration. The bassoon is very low in terms of pitch. However, the timbre is controlled and clear.

Hello its Asante and the flutes pitch is high and the timbre is light with no vibrato. The style for flute is hip hop because he was beatboxing with it. The oboe's pitch is high and the timbre is light with vibrato. The style for oboe is kind of the music they play at castles. The Clarinet's pitch is low and its timbre is heavy with no vibrato. The style for the Clarinet is jazz. The Bassoon's pitch is low and its timbre is heavy with vibrato.

Beat-boxing Flute

Beat-boxing Flute's timbre and pitch is different because, the timbre was breathy which has a low beat but, the pitch was high. The genre is popular because, the song has beat-boxing and beat-boxing is usually heard in popular style music.

Sonata II Handel Oboe Larghetto

Sonata II Handel Larghetto's timbre and pitch is different because, the timbre was piercing and the pitch was high but, had a softer sound rather than the timbre. The genre of music
is classical because, the tone of the song was peaceful.

Rhapsody in Blue Clarinet Solo

Rhapsody's in Blue Clarinet Solo's timbre and pitch is different because, the pitch was high but, the timbre has a more sharper quality. The style of this piece was a mixture between classical and jazz because, it had a sad, soft and artistic vibe.

Fire Bird Bassoon Solo

Fire Bird Bassoon Solo's timbre pitch is different because, the timbre has vibrato and the pitch was high. The genre of this musical piece is classical because, it has a soft tone to it.

The clarinet is a light, bright, clear, and focussed instrumanet. The clarinet has a high pitch and a vibrato. I believe that the clarinet is more of a classical form of music.

The oboe like the larinet has a high pitch and a vibrato. Also, the oboe is birght, breathly, warm and focussed. the oboe to me is a from of classicl music.

The flute is the highest pitched instrument in this selection of instruments. Flutes are a warm, breathly, and birght instrument. In this peice the flute is more of a pop for of music but t me in real life th flute is a form of classial music.

Bassons are a low pitched, breathly, and dark instruments. The basson in my opinion can be placed in the xlassical form of music as well as the others.

All great instruments, most have a high pit such as the flute and oboe. others had a high pit but not so high.I would say that the clarinet and bassoon was deeper than the flute and oboe.

The beatboxing flute had a very high pitch and the timbre seemed off key. The style is very hip-hop-ish.
The oboe has the second highest ptich and the timbre sounds very nice and in tune. The style is classical because of how smooth the song is.
The clarinet has medium to high pitch and it sounds very nice and in tune. The style was pop because it sound like I heard this song on Broadway before.
The bassoon has a low pitch compared to the other woodwinds. The style of this piece is blues or folk.

The first video has a punchy timbre, it is also very vibrato since he is beatboxing while playing the flute, and the picth was medium, it wasn't high nor was it low. In my opinion this music best describes hip hop music because it goes back to mid 1980s or 1990s where beatboxing originated.
The second video has a very piercing and slighty heavy timbre, and the pitch was diffinetly high. The way the boy plays the instrument makes me think it's an opera style of music.
The third, in my opinion, reminds me of blues because it sounds very southern and it is also upbeat, it makes me want to dance.
The timbre seems to be unfocussed because tone goes from low to high.
The fourth video seems like it could be opera because it was very dramatic and showed signs of depression or death, it reminds me of a funeral. The timbre was dark and seemed to be very focussed.

The "Beatboxing Flute" started off with a high pitch. Then it had a mid pitch. The timbre was piercing then breathy. The style of the music is popular because of the beatboxing.
