String Instruments

Hello class,
This week, you will listen to FOUR videos to the right. As you listen, you should think about how the timbre (the tone color) and pitch (highness/lowness) of the instruments are different. Also, you need to think about the style of music that you are hearing.

Here are some good timbre words:
light or heavy; dark or bright; breathy; punchy; clear; focussed or unfocussed; piercing; harsh; warm; mellow; resonant; flat; vibrato (do you hear it vibrating?) or no vibrato

Write 8 sentences: One sentence about each instrument that describes how it is uniquely different than the other three, and another sentence that describes the style of music that the instrument is playing.

Rubric:
20 pts - Students commented correctly using the blog, and included their name.
20 pts - Students comment on pitch of different instruments.
20 pts - Students correctly comment on the timbre of different instruments.
20 pts - Students correctly comment on the style of the music that each instrument is playing.
20 pts - Students used correct grammar and spelling.

Please write and submit your post for this assignment by Monday, September 13 for full credit.

The first string instrumnt that i listened to was the viola. The viola is a high pitched, light, clear, and warm instrument. This stringed instrument would beong in the classical forms of music.

The violin was a piercing, yet bright, medium pitched, and heavy instrument. If i could, I would either place this instrument in the popular or classical forms of music. Basically, it would have to depend on how the person played the instrument.

The cello is a light, warm, focussed, and bright instrument. i would place this instrument in the classical form of music.

String bass is a low pitched, heavy, vibrato instrument. The string bass would best be placed in the clasical form of music.

These string instruments are great; the violin had a high pit, and a fast meter. The violin video showed me how you can be creative with instruments, but also how you can make music fun and excited. The viola had a high pit with a slow paste, but great song. Then the string bass had a deep pit,all out great instruments.

The violin has the highest pitch out of all the stringed instruments and it has vibrato. This style of music is hip hop.

The viola is the only high pitched stringed instrument that doesn't have vibrato, and it is focussed. The style of music is classical.

The cello has a high pitch, but it seems more mellow than the other stringed instruments. The style of music is reggae.

The string bass has the lowest pitch out of all the stringed instruments and it is warm. The style of music is jazz.

Hip Hop Violin - Paul Dateh and Inka One

Hip Hop Violin – Paul Dateh and Inka One is uniquely different from all of the other three musical pieces because there was a DJ playing in the background. The style of music that the violin instrument portrayed was hip hop.

Violist Richard Yongjae O'Neill_Mysterio

Violist Richard Yongjae O'Neill_Mysterio is uniquely different from the other three musical pieces because the timbre is warm. The style that the violin was playing is classical.

Yo-Yo Mama & Bobby McFerrin

Yo-Yo Mama & Bobby McFerrin is uniquely different than the other three musical pieces because Hush Little Baby is a traditional lullaby that’s sung to babies to brighten their mood. The genre of music that the cello, violin, vocal, and contra base that the instruments played was traditional folk.

Marco Panascia Solo Jazz Blues in F Charlie Parker

Marco Panascia Solo Jazz Blues in F Charlie Parker is uniquely different from the other three songs because pitch stayed low throughout the song. The style of music that the String Bass portrayed was jazz.

The violin is a very unique instrument, at first I thought it was only used for classical music but it can go in well with any style unlike the other three. I would say the timbre would be piercing and vibrato, and the pitch is very high. The viola is unique and different fromthe others in pitch because it's dead in the middle of of low and high as in it can become low or high easily. I would say the style of the viola is strictly classical. The cello's are different in terms of you play it and you can play it with those sticks or use your hands. It's timbre is like a heavy focused tone with a low pitch. The style of the cello is more of a country style. The string bass is a more of a jazz style and it's different from the others because it always stays low. It's timbre is heavy and the pitch is low.

The Hip-Hop Violin has its own unique style. There is a DJ playing alongside the violinist. It has a kind of heavy and vibratto tone since it is hip-hop.
The viola seems to be more sophisticated then the hip-hop violin. It has a smoother and lighter tone quality. The style is more classical.
The cello has a deeper sound than the violin and the viola. The style of this seems to be folk because Hush Little Baby is a song that is passed down.
The string bass is different from all the other insrtuments because it has the deepest sound. The style of this seems to be blues.

Hello it's Asante and I think the timbre for violin was light and the pitch was soft. The style as you can already see is hip hop.
The Viola's timbre is bright and the pitch is soft because of the way he played it. The style is classical. The Cello's timbre was warm and the pitch was high. The style was classical mixed with blues because the way he was singing and he was telling a story. The String Bass's timbre was harsh and the pitch was heavy. The style for String Bass was blues because it sounded like the type of music they played at clubs back in the day.

The first video, Hip Hop Violin seems to be country hip hop. This video is different from the other three because is has a clear, focused, and some what piercing timbre, the pitch was diffinetly high.

The second video, Viola, violist Richard Yongjae O'neil plays, in my opinion classical music. The pitch was high and the way he played had a heavy timbre,it was almost painful, and it seemed like he wanted to get a massage across to the veiwers.

The third video, Cello, played by Yo-Yo MA and Bobby McFerrin was a lullaby, a nursery rhyme and they made the pace faster than it usually would be. The pitch was medium and it had a warm welcoming timbre.

The fourth video, played by Marco Panascia, String Bass was blues music because he played within twelve measures. The pitch was low and the string bass had a very heavy and kind of punchy timbre.
